Guidelines and Frameworks

This section provides schools and teachers with useful guidelines and frameworks from a mix of government, university, technology teacher associations and other organisations. Given the haste with which these guidelines and frameworks have been developed, schools and teachers might consider using a combination of ideas and strategies that have been presented, to help facilitate the responsible and ethical use of generative AI in school classrooms.

Australian Framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Schools

The framework seeks to guide the responsible and ethical use of generative AI tools in ways that benefit students, schools, and society, supporting all people connected with school education including school leaders, teachers, support staff, service providers, parents, guardians, students and policy makers

Government of South Australia: Guidelines for using AI in assessments

These guidelines, developed by the Government of South Australia, outlines the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) Board’s approach to the use of generative AI in SACE school-based assessments and submitted investigations. While it has been developed for use in South Australian schools, it nevertheless provides an excellent basis for schools in other states and territories, including overseas, to draw upon, when guidelines are either non-existent or unclear.

AI4K12

Artificial Intelligence (AI) for K-12 initiative, sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA)

US-based initiative that provides: (1) guidelines for AI education for K-12 schools; (2) an online, curated resource Directory to facilitate AI instruction; and (3) a community of practitioners, researchers, resource and tool developers focused on the AI for K-12 audience

Offers a mailing list that teachers can subscribe to, which allows access to new ideas and discussions on embedding AI from K-12; while this has been designed with US teachers in mind, nonetheless is an appropriate resource for all teachers given the scarcity of resources

Provides a progression chart for K-12 for the five big ideas (Perception, Representation & Reasoning, Learning, Natural Interaction, Societal Impact) of implementing AI in the classroom

Getting Started with AI-Enhanced Teaching: A Practical Guide for Instructors

This online article/blog/resource provides instructors, particularly those instructors teaching at MIT, with the basics of generative AI including terminology, ethical considerations (e.g. data privacy, falsehoods and bias)

UNESCO: AI competency framework for teachers

This framework, developed by the UN’s specialised agency for education, helps teachers by defining the knowledge, skills and values that they will need to “master in the age of AI”. It has been acknowledged that AI can pose significant risks to students, the teaching community, education systems and society at large, and hence there is the urgent need for teachers to have a framework that will provide support in the development of AI competencies among teachers to empower them to use these technological tools in their teaching practices in a safe, effective and ethical manner.
